Irreversible Reactions Flashcards
Dynamic
when a reaction is still occurring
Dynamic Equilibrium
the state of balance with both reactants and products present in unchanging amounts
Equilibrium
because of unchanging amounts
Fertiliser
used to replace nitrogen in the soil
Fritz Haber
a German chemist who invented the Haber process in the first world war and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for it, but later had that prize taken off him for working in developing chemical weapons and then took his own life
Haber Process
a reversible industrial process for producing ammonia from nitrogen, from the air, and hydrogen, from methane, which are purified and then passed over an iron catalyst at 450 degrees, the ammonia is then cooled and condensed into a liquid, after which the unreacted hydrogen and nitrogen is recycled
Litmus
a type of indicator solution
Methyl Orange
a type of indicator solution that turns red in acids and yellow in alkalis
Munitions
explosive weapons that are generally made by ammonia
Phenolphthalein
a type of indicator solution that turns fuchsia in alkali
Universal Indicator
a form of indicator solution made up of lots of different indicators
NH3’s boiling point
-33 degrees C
N2’s boiling point
-196 degrees C
H2’s boiling point
-253 degrees C
