Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) Flashcards
1
Q
What Type of Anemia is IDA Considered & Why?
A
- Nutritional Anemia
- Decrease in RBC Production
- Decrease in RBC production bc of altered Hgb synthesis due to Fe deficiency.
2
Q
What is IDA exactly
A
- Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA)
- Most common underlying cause of anemia worldwide
- Depleted or insufficient Hgb supplies slow production of RBC’s
- RBC’s become microcytic & hypo-chromic
3
Q
Pathophysiology of IDA
A
ABSOLUTE IRON DEFICIENCY: 1. Excess Iron loss 2. Iron absorption abnormalities 3. Insufficient dietary intake FUNCTIONAL IRON DEFICIENCY: 1. Re-allocation of Iron stores
4
Q
What are Specific Clinical Manifestations for IDA?
A
- Pica
- Glossitis
- Gastric Aatrophy
- Stomatitis (Inflamed lining of mouth) & smooth, sore tongue
- Pagophagia
- Leg cramping
- Coarsely ridged, spoon-shaped, brittle nails
- Cheilosis
5
Q
How can we diagnose IDA?
A
- Decreased & morphologically distinct RBC’s
- Decreased Hgb & Hct
- Low Iron level
- Low ferritin/transferrin
- Elevated total iron binding capacity (TIBC)
- Bone marrow aspiration
6
Q
