What problems did Ireland have in the 1830’s?
- Didn’t like absentee English and protestant landlords
- Didn’t like tithe to Anglican church
What was the ‘tithe war’?
Daniel O’Connell convinced people not to pay the tithe
What happened with primary schools in Ireland?
They were introduced as elementary schools to discourage the Irish language and to make the Irishmen more English for 5-11 year olds.
What did O’Connell want with the church?
He tried attacking the CofI and got some radical s to support changing the CofI because they thought the CofE would change.
What did O’Connell want with the Act of Union?
He got 40 MPs to try to repeal the Act of Union
What was the Coercion Act of 1833?
Made to stamp out unrest and collect the unpaid tax. Gatherings had to be government sanctioned
What was the Temporalities Act of 1834?
This was a vague act that had £150 000. The radicals wanted it to go to Irish Catholic education. Tories wanted it to go to the clergymen that weren’t supported by the Tithe.
What did O’Connell agree to in 1835?
He would turn down his demands for repealing the Act of Union.
What could Catholics do now that they couldn’t before?
Have higher jobs such as in legal and administrative roles like a magistrate.
What happened to O’Connell in 1841?
He became mayor of Dublin
What is the Irish Municipal Corporations Act of 1840?
Provisions of Municipal reform but to a lesser extent so it could go through parliament
