Why did the invasion of Iraq take place?
President Bush claimed that Iraq held WMD(weapons of mass destruction).
He also claimed that Saddam Hussein was working with terrorists like the al-Qaeda.
President Bush also claimed that he wanted to liberate Iraq of terrorism.
Why was the occupation of Iraq a failure?
Inexperienced rulers were put in charge of handling large ministries.
There were too few coalition soldiers on the streets and Iraq’s military had been disbanded.
Bush’s claims (WMD and Saddam Hussein) were discredited.
How did the al-Qaeda make Iraq ungovernable?
They threatened to assassinate anyone who worked with the US. (49 Iraqi National Guards)
They took foreign citizens hostage, killed them, and posted videos of the killing online.
Increased conflict between Sunni and Shia Muslims through faked suicide bombings. al-Qaeda organised suicide bombings of the Shia Muslims. Shia will then accuse Sunni and then attack them.
How did the US improve law and order?
More troops were stationed on the streets.
Iraqi rebels were recruited to help the Americans against the al-Qaeda.
More power was given to the elected government.
