Why did the Cold War start?
It started because the USSR kept spreading communism and the US were suspicious of Stalin.
Describe the Cold War.
It took place from 1947 – 1991 and it was a cold war between the US.
A cold war is a war fought without weapons nor direct military contact.
In this case, US and USSR were caught in a power struggle where they had arms races and a space race.
However, there were still wars and troops that did die. The Cold War was fought with what is known as proxy wars, meaning countries that battle physically on the behalf of another.
It first started with Stalin and the USSR trying to spread communism from 1945-1948.
Then, the formation of NATO took place to contain communism.
After that, the Korean War took place in 1950. Stalin sent North Korea to attack South Korea, US’s ally.
In 1955, formation of Warsaw Pact.
In 1957, the Space Race took place and the Soviet Union won.
In 1961 and 1962, war nearly broke out because Soviet Union sent missiles.
In 1973, the detente took place. US withdrew troops from South Vietnam. The SALT I was also signed to limit the number of nuclear weapons for the first time.
In 1975, US, Soviet Union and other countries signed the Helsinki Agreement. Government respect human rights.
Around 1960s and 1970s, there was a theory that if the US and Soviet Union went to war, their nuclear weapons would destroy the world.
