What is HIDA?

HIDA is the acronym for a growing and ageing population
H - healthy ageing
I - increased population living with chronic disease and disability
D - demand for health services and workforce
A - availability of carers and volunteers
What is Australia’s growing and ageing population caused by?
- decreased birth rate
- decline mortality rates with an increase in life expectancy
- sustained rated of immigration from overseas
What does ‘healthy ageing’ mean?
‘Healthy ageing’ means throughout all different life stages, illness is prevented and effectively treated
What are the ways to ensure healthy ageing?
- increasing education the population regrading food health practices (e.g meeting national guidelines for physical activity)
- engaging in preventative health promotion initiative (e.g ‘slip, slop, slap’)
What is the benefits of healthy ageing?
- less pressure on healthcare system
- ongoing contribution to workforce
- fewer illnesses and/or disabilities
What are the demands for health services and workforce shortages?
- due to a ageing population the need for more health services and systems increase
Define carers
Individuals that provide informal care of people living with chronic disease and disability
(E.g spouse, neighbour and friend)
Define volunteers
Volunteers assist with activities such as transport, shopping, meals on wheels and social activities

- institutional and non-institutional care

- Hospitals ( can be public, private and psychiatric)
