IQ1: Identifying Priority Health Issues Flashcards
Social justice principles
- equity
- diversity
- supportive environments
Priority population groups
Identifying subgroups with inequitable health allows health authorities to:
- determine health disadvantaged groups
- better understanding social determinants of health
- identify prevalence of disease/injury in specific groups
- determine needs of group relation to social justice
- allocate funding to reduce prevalence - creates equity
Prevalence of conditions
Vital that the government allocates resources.time to conditions with high prevalence within population
Potential for prevention and early intervention
Health problems that are highly preventable, as well as those that respond well to intervening in its early stages, deserve increased attention by those involved in health promotion
Costs to the individual and community
Direct costs - the money spent on diagnosing, treating and caring for the sick + the money spent on prevention
Indirect costs - the value of the output lost when people become too ill to work or die prematurely
How do we identify priority issues for Australia’s health?
Identified through epidemiological studies
SCP123 highlight the prevalence of a condition and priority population
What role do the principles of social justice play?
- allowing for the equitable allocation of resources and funding to minimise gaps in health status amongst population groups
- priority populations are less burdened by health inequities
Why is it important to prioritise?
- equilibrium in the health status of Australia as a whole, rather than varying status for population
