Indications of Atrovent
Persistent bronchospasm (Asthma), COPD exacerbation
Mechanism of action of Atrovent
Inhibits interaction of acetylcholine at receptor sites of bronchial smooth muscle (in the lungs), resulting in decreased contractility of the bronchial smooth muscle and a decrease in mucous production
Contraindications of Atrovent
Hypersensitivity to ipratropium, atropine, alkaloids, peanuts.
Note: New manufacturing has eliminated the contraindication pertaining to peanut and soy allergy.
Adverse effects of Atrovent
Headache, dizziness, nervousness, fatigue, tremor, blurred vision, cough, dyspnea, worsening COPD symptoms, tachycardia, palpitations, flushing, MI, dry mouth, NV, GI distress
Precautions of Atrovent
No drug interactions reported
Adult and pediatric dose and admin of Atrovent
250 to 500 mcg inhalation with nebulizer every 20 minutes up to 3 times
