Sympathomimetic
Albuterol’s mechanism of action
Selective beta-2 agonist that stimulates adrenergic receptors of the sympathomimetic nervous system. Results in smooth-muscle relaxation in the bronchial tree and peripheral vasculature.
Indications for Albuterol
Treatment of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease (COPD, asthma). Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Contraindications for Albuterol
Hypersensitivity, tachycardia, dysrhythmias, especially those caused by digitalis. Synergistic with other sympathomimetic.
Adverse effects of Albuterol
Headache, fatigue, lightheadedness, irritability, restlessness, aggressive behavior, pulmonary edema, hoarseness, nasal congestion, increased sputum, hypertension, tachycardia, dysrhythmias, chest pain, palpitations, NV, dry mouth, epigastric pain, and tremors.
Precautions for Albuterol
TCA’s may potentiate vasculature effects, Beta
Blockers will antagonize effects, may
Cause hypokalemia
Dose and admin of Albuterol in adults
2.5 mg in 2.5 to 3ml’s of normal saline,
Nebulized over 10 to 15 minutes
Dose and admin of Albuterol in pediatrics
:<20 kg – 1.25 mg/dose via hand held nebulizer or mask over 20 minutes
Pedi: >20 kg – 2.5 mg/dose via hand held nebulizer or mask over 20 minutes
