IP Flashcards
Mafic - magnesium, iron, low viscosity, watery
Felsic - Iron, Silica - less dense, viscous, traps gasses - effusive, slow, but can explode!
Volcanic - outside the surface
plutonic - inside the mantle
extrusive
intrusive
mafic as lava is not viscous - resistance to flow - less gases - basalt in sea floor has less gases
felsic as lava is very viscous - lots of trapped gas
Wegener Continental Drift 1915
Plate Tectonics 1960s
Steep volcano - stratovolcano, composite volcano
- high viscosity
Broad base - shield volcano
Normal Fault - divergent, middle piece drop, normal to gravity
Reverse - converging, middle piece rises, anti to gravity
Diverging continental gives us a rift boundary
compressional force gives reverse fault
continental-oceanic
- oceanic trench and volcanic mtn range
O-O
- trench and volcanic island arc
C-C - mountain range
Continental crust is thicker, harder to let magma come through
