ions, formulae and equations Flashcards
Name the seven diatomic molecules
Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Fluorine, Oxygen, Iodine, Chlorine, Bromine (Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer)
The formula for all acids starts with H. Why?
Because all acids break apart in water to form H+ ions. The more H+ ions, the stronger the acid
What is the formula for hydrochloric acid?
HCl
What is the formula for nitric acid?
HNO3
What is the formula for sulfuric acid?
H2SO4
The formula for all bases includes OH. Why?
Because bases break apart in water to form negatively charged OH ions. The greater the concentration of OH ions, the stronger the base
What is the formula for sodium hydroxide?
NaOH
What is the formula for potassium hydroxide?
KOH
What is the formula for ammonia solution (ammonium hydroxide)?
NH4OH
What is the general equation for the reaction of an acid and a metal?
Metal + acid –> salt + hydrogen (MASH)
What is the general equation for the reaction of an acid and a base?
Acid + base –> salt + water (SWAB)
What is the general equation for the reaction of an acid and a carbonate?
Acid + carbonate –> salt + water + CO2
What is the formula for a hydroxide ion?
OH-
What is the formula for a carbonate ion?
CO3 2-
What is the formula for a nitrate ion?
NO3-
