Halogens Flashcards
What state and colour is chlorine at room temperature?
Green gas
What is the physical state and colour of bromine at room temperature?
Red-brown liquid
What is the physical state and colour of iodine at room temperature?
Dark grey solid
Why are higher halogens in the group more reactive?
The shell with the missing electron is nearer the nucleus (no shielding)
How do the properties change as you go down the group?
Darker colour
Higher boiling point
Less reactive
What’s the difference between hydrogen chloride gas and hydrochloric acid?
When hydrogen chloride is dissolved in water, the HCl molecules split into H+ ions and Cl- ions (dissociation)
Why is HCl acidic in water but not in methylbenzene?
When dissolved in methylbenzene (organic solvent) it doesn’t dissociate into H+ ions so not acidic
