How are ions formed?

A

They are formed when electrons are transferred from one atom to another. This is done to make the atom stable. An atom has no charge as the protons and the electrons have equal charge; however, ions will have a charge.

In GCSE, all the configurations that we have to know is in the format 2:8:8:8:infite 8 For example, silicon has 14 electrons. Therefore, their atomic configuration would be 2:8:4

How do ionic bonds work?

A

Ionic bonding occurs between two ions; they are attracted to each other because of their opposite charges, so we say that they have an electrostatic attraction. This attraction bonds them into an ionic bond.

Do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points or low, and why?

A

They have high melting and boiling points

To melt or boil anything, heat is required to break down strong bonds. Therefore, the stronger bonds, the more heat is required. Ionic compounds have strong bonds beacause of strong electrostatic forces between the oppositely charged ions; therefore, they do not melt or boil until they are under considerable heat. This means that they have high metling and boiling points.
