Electrons and the Periodic Table - Revision Flashcards
How do you work out the electronic configuration of the first 20 elements on the periodic table?
The group number represents the number of electrons in the outer shell The period represents the number of shells the element has
How do you work out how many electrons are in the outer shell of an element with the periodic table?
The group represents the number of electrons in the outer shell
What are groups?
Groups are columns in the periodic table
What are periods?
Periods are rows in the periodic table
How do you classify a metal on the basis of their electrical conductivity and the acid-base character of their oxides?
Metals are all conductors of electricity Metals from metal-oxides, which are alkaline
How do you classify a non-metal on the basis of their electrical conductivity and the acid-base character of their oxides?
Non-metals don’t conduct electricity Non-metals for non-metal oxides, which are acidic
Why do elements in the same group of the periodic table have similar chemical properties?
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell; therefore, they will react and bond in a similar way. For example, all elements in group one form +1 ions as they all lose an electron to become stable (full outer shell)
Do noble gases react?
No, they are inert. This means that they do not react
Why are noble gases stable?
They are stable because they do not have to lose or gain an electron
Where are metals and non-metals in the periodic table?
Metals are on the left of the line and non-metals are on the right.
