Ions and Formulas Flashcards
0
Q
Ions have the electronic structure of a noble gas. What does this mean?
A
They have a full outer shell.
1
Q
Which groups are the most likely to form ions?
A
1&2 and 6&7
2
Q
True or false?
The overall charge of any ionic compound is zero.
A
True.
3
Q
How do you work out the formula of an ionic compound?
A
Look at the charges of the ions. They must be balanced. If magnesium chloride has Mg(+2) and Cl(-1) then the formula will be MgCl2 because you need 2 Cl ions to balance out the +2 charge of a magnesium ion.
4
Q
How do you draw the electronic structure of an ion?
A
Draw the ion with all of it’s shells, and put a big square bracket around it. Then next to it use a + or - to show it’s charge.
