Q

How do you work out the formula of an ionic compound?

A

Look at the charges of the ions. They must be balanced. If magnesium chloride has Mg(+2) and Cl(-1) then the formula will be MgCl2 because you need 2 Cl ions to balance out the +2 charge of a magnesium ion.

Q

How do you draw the electronic structure of an ion?

A

Draw the ion with all of it’s shells, and put a big square bracket around it. Then next to it use a + or - to show it’s charge.
