Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
When atoms share electrons with each other to get full outer shells.
Covalent bonding occurs between which type of elements?
Non-metals and non-metals.
Hydrogen has 1 electron in it’s outer shell. How will it get a full outer shell?
By forming a covalent bond with another hydrogen atom.
H - H
Carbon has 4 outer electrons, so how will it get a full outer shell?
By forming 4 covalent bonds with a hydrogen atom to make Methane. H l H - C - H l H
Nitrogen has 5 outer electrons. How will it get a full outer shell?
By forming 3 covalent bonds with hydrogen atoms to make Ammonia.

Oxygen has 6 outer electrons. When it is a gas, how will it get a full outer shell?
By forming a covalent bond with another oxygen atom. In total, 4 electrons will be shared, 2 from the original atom, and 2 from the second atom. This is a double bond.
