Covalent Substances Flashcards
What are the two types of covalent substances?
1: Simple molecules
2: Giant covalent structures
True or false?
Covalent substances have strong covalent bonds.
True.
Simple molecules have high or low melting/ boiling points?
VERY low; molecules are easily parted from each other.
True or false?
BOTH simple molecules and giant covalent structures have very weak intermolecular forces.
True.
Do covalent substances conduct electricity?
No because they’re not metals, HOWEVER, graphite does.
Why does graphite conduct electricity?
Each carbon atom has one delocalised (free) electron and these free electrons conduct heat and electricity.
True or false?
Simple molecules have big molecules.
False: they have small molecules.
