Ionic compounds Flashcards
How are ionic bonds formed?
The transfer of electrons (loss or gain) to form charged particles - ions.
What is oxidation?
When an atom loses electrons
What is reduction?
When an atom gain electrons
What makes an atom unreactive?
Atoms want a full outer shell - then they are unreactive
What makes an atom reactive?
If they have a shell with just one electron or if they have a nearly full shell
What is ionic bonding?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions - this gives them high melting and boiling points
What are some common cations?
Li+, Na+, K+, Be2+, Mg2+, Ca2+
What are some common anions?
O2-, S2-, F-, Cl-, Br-
What affects melting and boiling points?
The charges on the ions in a lattice affect the strength of ionic bonding, this increases mtp and bpt
What is an ionic crystal?
A giant three-dimensional lattice structure held together by the attraction between oppositely charged ions
Describe the positions of ions in Sodium Chloride?
A giant lattice with a pattern of alternating Na+ and Cl- ions
