Ionic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
Why do ionic compounds have a regular lattice structure?
A
Ionic bonds are very strong and electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
2
Q
Name two similar properties ionic compounds share due to their structure.
A
1) They have high melting and boiling points: due to the strong bonds between ions, take a lot of energy to break these bonds.
2) They conduct electricity when aqueous or molten: when in aqueous solution (dissolved), the ions desperate and are free to move so carry a current. The same happens when they melt, ions free to move, carry a current.

Q
What type of structure does an ionic compound have?
A
The ions for a closely packed regular lattice arrangement
