Q

All of the atoms on the left hand side of the periodic table (eg. sodium, potassium, calcium) have just one or two electrons in their outer shell, what does this mean?

A

They want to get rid of the electrons so they have only full shells left, which is how they like it. They are then called an ion.

6
Q

The elements in group 6 and 7, such as oxygen and chlorine, babe outer shells that are nearly full, what does this mean?

A

They’re eager to gain that extra one or two electrons to fill their shell up. When they do, they become ions.
