ionic compounds Flashcards
what structure do ionic compounds have?
giant ionic lattice
describe a giant ionic lattice structure
thousands of ions form a closely packed regular lattice arrangement and there are strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions in all directions
why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
there are many strong bonds between the ions and it takes a lot of energy to break the bonds
why can’t ionic compounds conduct electricity in a solid state?
the ions are in fixed positions
why can ionic compounds conduct electricity in a liquid or aqueous state?
the ions are free to move
what state are ionic compounds at room temp?
solid
overall charge of ionic compound
neutral
how are ionic compounds formed-explain in terms of MgO?
-reaction of metal and non-metal
-electron transfer occurs
-Mg in group 2 so gives 2 electrons to O to form full outer shell
-O in group 6 so receives 2 electrons from Mg to form full outer shell
-Mg becomes Mg²⁺
-O becomes O²⁻
how are ionic compounds held together?
by strong electrostatic forces of attraction in all directions between oppositely charged ions
