Ionic Bonds Flashcards
Cation
Positively charged ion
Anion
A negatively charged ion
Family is I-III a of the periodic table
Lose one two or three electrons, respectively, to become cations
Families V-VIIA on the periodic table
Gain one through three electrons, respectively, to become anions
Naming ions: -ous
Lower numerical oxidation state (ignore +/-) signs
Ex) Ferrous = Iron (II)
Naming ions: -ic
Higher numerical oxidation state (ignore +/-) signs
Ex) Ferric = Iron (III)
Ionic bond
Occurs between a metal, which loses e-, and a nonmetal, which gains e-
Chemical formulas for ionic compounds
Metal comes first, followed by nonmetal. Use criss-cross rule to balance the charges and make the compound neutral
Ex) magnesium bromide
Electrolytes
Substances that carry an electric current in the molten state or when dissolved in water
