Ionic Bonding Flashcards
explain ionic bonding
electrostatic attraction after metal atom loses electrons to become a cation and non metal receive such electrons to become anions because they are unstable
what are the 5 properties
high melt point hard brittle conductivity in aqueous/liquid phase solubility
explain why ionic bonds have high melt point
the strong bonds require lots of thermal energy to break free
explain why ionic bonds are hard
strong bonds make it hard to disrupt/separate lattice
explain why ionic bonds are brittle
when force distorts the lattice the right positions are lost and electrons could be next to electrons which causes repulsion - shattering the lattice
explain the conductivity of ionic bonds
olid ionic bonds cannot conduct bc no delocalised and tighlty packed
when solid melts (aqueous state) ions become free and can transmit charge
when solid dissolves in water (liquid state) the bonds are broken and the separate ions can conduct
explain the solubility of ionic bonds
if soluble the ion break away and mix with the water molecules (depends on attraction)
what is an example of an ionic compound
NaCl
