Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is an ionic bond?
A
Strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
2
Q
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
A
- giant ionic lattice structure
- many strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions (lots of energy to overcome)
3
Q
What factors influence the strength of ionic bonding?
A
- greater ionic charge
- smaller ionic radius
4
Q
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity when solid?
A
No because ions are in a fixed position
5
Q
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten/aqueous?
A
Yes because the ions are mobile (free to move)
6
Q
Are ionic compounds soluble?
A
Yes because ions make attractions to the different atoms in water and are ‘pulled apart’
