Q

What physical properties does ionic compounds have/

A
  1. High b.p/ m.p (most), thus non-volatile - solid R.T.P

2. Soluble in water but insoluble in organic substances

Q

Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten/ aqueaous

A
  • Solid state, ions held in fixed positions by strong electrostatic forces of attraction
  • When molten/ aqueous, the strong forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions are overcome
  • Ions in the ionic compound in the aqueous state are free to move to conduct electricity
