Ionic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What structure does ionic compounds form?
A
Giant lattice structure
2
Q
What physical properties does ionic compounds have/
A
- High b.p/ m.p (most), thus non-volatile - solid R.T.P
2. Soluble in water but insoluble in organic substances
3
Q
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten/ aqueaous
A
- Solid state, ions held in fixed positions by strong electrostatic forces of attraction
- When molten/ aqueous, the strong forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions are overcome
- Ions in the ionic compound in the aqueous state are free to move to conduct electricity
4
Q
Why diff in b.p/ m.p? (ionic bonding)
A
The more the electrons exchanged, the greater the electrostatic forces between the the molecules, thus…
5
Q
Define the term ionic bonding
A
transfer of electrons from metal to non-metal (not sharing)
6
Q
Define the term ionic bonds
A
The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive and negative ions
