Covalent bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Define the term covalent bonds
A
Bonds formed by the sharing of electrons between 2 non metal atoms
2
Q
Examples of SMS (simple molecular structures) and GMS (giant molecular structures)
A
GMS: Diamond, graphite, silicone dioxide (silicone, sand, glass)
SMS: everything else that isn’t GMS
3
Q
Physical properties of SMS
A
- Low b.p/ m.p (thus, volatile/ liquid/ gas R.T.P)
- Insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents
- Do not conduct electricity in any state (no free moving ions or electrons as they exist as molecules)
4
Q
Physical properties of GMS
A
- High b.p/ m.p, most solid state
- No conduct electricity (except graphite)
- Insoluble in water and organic substances (not strong enough to oversome/ break strong covalent bonds)
5
Q
Intermolecular vs intramolecular
A
Inter: Between molecules
Intra: Inside the molecule itself
