Q

Examples of SMS (simple molecular structures) and GMS (giant molecular structures)

A

GMS: Diamond, graphite, silicone dioxide (silicone, sand, glass)
SMS: everything else that isn’t GMS

Q

Physical properties of SMS

A
  1. Low b.p/ m.p (thus, volatile/ liquid/ gas R.T.P)
  2. Insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents
  3. Do not conduct electricity in any state (no free moving ions or electrons as they exist as molecules)

Q

Physical properties of GMS

A
  1. High b.p/ m.p, most solid state
  2. No conduct electricity (except graphite)
  3. Insoluble in water and organic substances (not strong enough to oversome/ break strong covalent bonds)
