Ionic and molecular bonds Flashcards
what are the properties of ionic compounds
hard and brittle - ionic bonds are very strong, in crystal lattice
high boiling points
conduct electricity as liquids(not solids)
conduct electrivcity when dissolved in water
Do ionic compounds have molecules?
No
properties of molecular compounds
can be solid liquid or gas
solids can be soft, waxy, crystalline.
low boiling/ melting points
poor conductivity
Why is the boiling point and melting point of molecular compounds lower than ionic?
The bonds between molecular compounds are not as strong as ionic. Mol comp are more likely to break apart.
Which elements are diatomic?
HOFBrICl
What is the bonding capacity
the number of covalent bonds that an atom can form. The bonding capacity is usually equivalent to the number of unpaired electrons in the valence shell of an atom
What is formal charge
The difference between the valence electrons in an isolated atom and the number of electrons assigned to that atom in a Lewis structure
Formal charge = # of valence e- - # of unbonded e- - (# of bonded e-/2)
Why is it important to consider formal charge when drawing bonds
The formal charge of an atom must be as low as possible.
You cannot have a positive formal charge atom bonded to a negative charged atom
What are resonance structures in molecules
when the bonds can be on multiple atoms
ex. CO3. THe double bond could be on any off the 3 oxygen’s. This is a resonance strucure
Draw 3 times or use a dotted second line
