Chemical reactions Flashcards
What happens when you combine metal chloride and oxygen
MgCl2 (s) + O2 (g)
metal chlorate
MgCl2 (s) + O2 (g) -> Mg(ClO3)2(s)
hydrogen +nonmetal
simple acid
What is an acidic oxide
an oxide that when reacting with water, turns into an acid
ex. carbon dioxide it makes carbonic acid,
nitrogen oxides NO2+H2O - > HNO3 + HNO2
Sulfur oxides
Metal oxide + carbon dioxide
metal carbonate
Non-metal oxide + water
oxyaxid
What does HCl(g) + NH3(g) make
NH4Cl(s)
What makes acids
non metal oxides and water
What makes bases(hydroxides)
metal oxides and water
Acid oxide + basic oxide
CO2(g) + CaO(s)
“Salt” ionic compound
CO2(g) + CaO(s) - > CaCo3
What does metal nitrate decompose into
Metal nitrite and oxygen gas
Metal + acid ->
new compound + water
How does the metal activity series help reaction perdiction
One element can displace things that are below it but not above it
The farther apart the elements are the faster the reaction will take place. only for SD reactions
What are some problems with the activity series
only works if the reaction is aqueous or room temp
also ex.
Aluminum should react with hydrogen in steam but aluminum oxide needs to be scubbed off first
Copper cant displace hydrogen from acids but it can react with nitric and sulfuric acid bc they are oxidization agents
How can single displacement be used
to remove metal from a solution
DD will only happen if one of the products is…(3)
- A precipitate (no reaction if both products are aq)
- One product is a gas
- on products is a molecular compound
How do ionic comp dissolve vs molecular
ionic compounds actually dissolve - the ions break up
molecular compounds disperse due to the attraction in polar water molecules
What is the complete ionic equation
Equation showing all the ions in the reaction. The precipitate is shown together. The state must be written
Ag+(aq ) + NO3-(aq ) + Na+(aq ) + Cl-(aq )
–> AgCl(s) + NO3-(aq ) + Na+(aq )
What is a net ionic equation
based off of the complete ionic equation, it only shows the elements involved in the reaction. Not spectator ions
Ag+(aq ) + Cl-(aq ) - > AgCl(s)
Which products can further decompose into a gas and water (3)
H2CO3(aq),H2SO3(aq ),NH4OH(aq )
Acid + carbonate
H2SO4(aq ) + CaCO3(s)
carbon dioxide + water+ionic compound
-> H2CO3(aq ) + CaSO4(s)
2. H2CO3(aq ) - > H2O(l) + CO2(g)
Difference between complete and incomplete combustion
Complete is when there is an abundance of oxygen-
Makes carbon dioxide + water
Incomplete is when there is not enough oxygen -
results in CO , not one single balanced equation
What are the 3 Unregulated car emissions
Nitrogen gas - air is mostly N
CO2 - contributes to global warming
water vapour - product of complete combustion
What are the 3 regulated car emissons
NO2, NO3 - contributes to acid rain, causes irritation
CO - poisonous gas
hydrocarbons - contributes to smog
What is a catalyst
Something that speeds up the reaction but is not used up in the process
