- 499 BC
- Aristagoras (tyrant of Miletus) plans to increase power and persian favour suggests to Artaphernes (Darius 1/2 brother, satrap) to capture Naxos to use as base for expansion
- Artaphernes takes fleet of 200 triremes (persians + Ionians) under command of Megabates (Darius’ cousin) and Aristagoras
- 4 month siege ends in stalemate, returns
- Aristagoras must meet men’s expenses (pay), fears he will be punished
- Decides to lead full scale revolt of Ionian Greeks against Persia, seeks help from Athen
- 498 BC Ionian allies attacked Sardis, burnt it
- Persian force beat Ionians at Esphesus
- Persian force sacked and enslaved city of Miletus, destroyed temple of Apollo
- Mardonius (Darius’ son in law) asked to re-capture lost Ionian cities
- Fleet wrecked in storm off coast of Athos (herodotus attributes to work of Gods)
- Persia begin building ships rapidly indicating plans to attack Greece
