Ion electron Equations and Redox Equations Flashcards
this deck will go over how to correctly format ion electron equations and redox equations at higher
how would you balance an ion electron equation
add electrons to the side which are more positive
what are the four steps to balancing an equation with more than one element in it
take this equation for the example BrO4^- –> Br2
- Balance the “non-oxygen” –> 2BrO4^- –> Br2
- Balance the Oxygens by adding H2O
2BrO4^- –> Br2 + 8H2O - balance the the new H’s by adding H^+ ions
16H^+ + 2BrO4^- –> Br2 + 8H2O - balance the charges by adding electrons to the more positive side
14e^- + 16H^+ + 2BrO4^- –> Br2 + 8H2O

what is a reducing agent
a reducing agent is the substance being oxidised
what is an oxidation agent
an oxidation agent is the substance which is being reduced
in terms of the periodic table where are the best reducing agents
group 1 has the best reducing agents
in terms of the electrochemical series where are the best reducing agents
the top right (Li is the strongest)
in terms of the periodic table where are the best oxidation agents
group 7 has the best oxidation agents
in terms of the electrochemical series where are the best oxidation agents
the bottom left (F is the strongest)
