InterMolecular Forces Flashcards
what is the full name for intermolecular forces
Van der Waals Forces
what are the 3 types of intermolecular forces
london dispersion forces (LDF)
Permanent Dipole to Permanent Dipole Interactions (PD-PDI)
Hydrogen Bonds
what is a temporary dipole
a temporary dipole is when an atom has a negative and positive part
what is an LDF attraction
An LDF attraction is an attraction between the positive nucleus of one atom and the negative electrons of the other
what happens when there is a greater number of electrons present within a large molecule and a bond is needed
the bigger the molecule, the greater number of atoms therefore the more electrons there are. meaning more LDFs and more energy is required
where do PD-PDI bonds exist
PD-PDI bonds only exist between polar covalent molecules
if all dipoles face a general direction what type of bond is this
if all dipoles face in the same direction this bond is Polar
if all dipoles even each other out what type of bond is this
if all dipoles even out this is a Non-Polar Bond
why is a PD-PDI force stronger than an LDF
the more intermolecular forces present the greater the melting and boiling point this also increases viscosity and also making the molecule less volatile
