Iodine (I) Flashcards
What function does Se play in the digestion of Iodine?
Se is a cofactor for glutathione, which is needed to reduced iodate(IO3-) to iodide during digestion. Both form of iodine is rapidly absorbed in the stomach and upper small intestines.
What are the functions of Iodine?
- Iodide is taken by the thyroid for the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
- The metabolic form of triiodothyronine (T3) regulates the rate of cell metabolism, and well as the activity and growth in multiple tissues including fetal, neuronal and those in the periphery.
What are good sources of Iodine? what are the RDA?
- Seafood, salt water fish and iodized salt.
2. 150mcg M/F all groups.
What are the symptoms/signs of Iodide deficiency?
- Insufficient Thyroxine (T4) production -thereby eliminating its negative feedback on thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)->resulting a hyperplasia of thyroid gland or goiter from constant release of TSH, reduced metabolic rate, elevated serum cholesterol, increased embryonal and postnatal mortality, cognitive and neuromuscular impairment, deaf-mutism, impaired fertility, and cretinism when iodine def is severe.
Why caution is indicated when supplementing iodine to a patient with iodine deficiency?
If Iodine deficiency is present, and iodine intake is increased too rapidly, then normal control mechanisms are ineffective, and thyrotoxicosis can occur.
How do we assess Iodine status?
Either the 24 hr excretion or the concentration of iodine in random samples of urine is reliable markers for iodine status.
>5mcg/L suggests a risk of iodine and > 2mcg/L suggests that there’s a serious risk that infants will be born with cretinism.
What are clinical signs of thyrotoxicosis?
This condition is called jodbasedow. Nodular goiter, weight loss, tachycardia, muscle weakness, and skim warmth
