Fluoride (F) Flashcards
1
Q
True/False: Factors that promote gastric acid secretion decreases the absorption rate of F.
A
False. F absorption is inversely related to pH. So factors that promote gastric acid secretions increases F absorption rate, and factors that inhibit gastric acid secretions decreases F absorption.
2
Q
What are the biochemical functions of F?
A
- To protect calcified tissues against pathological demineralization by forming fluorapatite crystals rather than the usual hydroxyapatite crystals.
- Important for minimizing the risk of developing dental caries.
- Stimulation of new bone by stimulating osteoblasts and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
3
Q
What are the DRI and sources of F?
A
- 3/3mg/d for 14-18 M/F and 4/3mg/d for all other groups M/F.
- Sources are toothpaste, fluoridated water, tea, seaweed, dental treatments.
4
Q
What condition could result from F deficiency?
A
Specific signs/symptoms for F deficiency in human are non existent but it individuals who is deficiency has an increased risk for developing dental caries.
5
Q
What condition could result from long-term ingestion of excessive amounts (>5mg/d) of F?
A
Skeletal fluorosis.
