Investigation For Research Using Primary And Secondary Research Techniques / Data Sources Flashcards
Investigation for research data
Information needs to be gathered in order to make the best product that the customer market will like
Investigation may involve asking users views or finding out about new materials and processes, testing / measuring elements of a design proposal, calculating costs to see if something is a viable option
Research and investigations should be relevant, meaningful and specific to the design challenge
Iterative design
Involves making small steps with constant changes as feedback is gained
Stages include formulating ideas, making prototypes, testing, analysing and evaluating the latest version
Feedback
Feedback is used to refine and modify areas and some or all of the processes is then repeated
Primary data sources
Sought whenever possible as usually are specific to design challenge They include: Interviews Questionnaires Focus groups Case studies Physical materials testing Product analysis Observations of users and materials Taking measurements
Secondary data sources
Means Other people have gathered and presented it first. They include:
Written articles ie books, magazines, internet pages
Official data ie government statistics, company information
Media ie news, radio, television broadcasts
Exemplar work of other designers and or students
Market research
Deciding whether a product is viable proposition and is likely to sell, be useful, or full a gap in the market
Information gathering techniques include:
Interviews and questionnaires
Product analysis
Ergonomic and anthropometric data
