inverted u theory Flashcards
What Theory is used to explain Arousal?
inverted u theory
What does the inverted-U theory state?
- as arousal increases, so does performance up to an optimum point
- after which if arousal continues to rise, performance will drop owing to becoming over anxious
optimum arousal
the point at which the best, or optimal performance occurs
Explain what level of arousal fine movement skills require. Give an example.
–concentration and precise movement is requires
- need lower levels of arousal
- e.g. golf putt
Explain what level of arousal gross movement skills require. Give an example.
- large muscle movement are required
- require higher levels of arousal
- e.g. tackle in rugby
What level of arousal does a beginner need?
lower levels of arousal
why is it to be under aroused
their performance in their sporting activity or skill may be low; this could be due to boredom or not enough concentration
why is it bad to be over aroused
Over-arousal may also lead to low performance in the participant’s activity; this may be due to high levels of stress or anxiety
