What happened during 793 to 865
At first the viking’s raided monasteries for their gold and Jewellery such as Lindisfarne. Later on more vikings came to settle and farm as Denmark was too sandy and Norway was too hilly. Also last sons came because of their lack of inheritance.
What happened during 865 to 878
The Great Heathen Army arrived to conquer England allegedly after a Viking leader Ragnar Lordbrok was killed.
What happened during 878 to 978
Alfred the great defeated the Viking leader Guthrum, he then became Christian in exchange for ruling the Danelaw. Alfred the great set the foundations for English identity and was recognised as overlord by other kingdoms.
What happened during 978 to 1002
In 978 Aethelred the Unready became king, he married Emma of Normandy and their son was Edward the confessor
What happened during 1002 to 1016
In 1002 king Aethelred the unready massacres the Danes in St. Brice’s Day Massacre and flees to Normandy. Sweyn Forkbeard king of Denmark began a decade of raids on England to avenge his sister’s death and he briefly became king of England
What happened during 1016 and after
King Cnut the great son of Sweyn takes over England in 1016 and formed the North Sea Empire in 1028 he established 20 years of peace for his empire, he also established a good relationship with the church and built on king Alfred’s foundation of English identity and made England his main domain. His son’s reign did not last.
