Introduction to the Sun Flashcards
What is the Photosphere?
It is the visible surface of the Sun.
What is the Chromosphere?
It is the low region of the Sun’s atmosphere.
What is the Corona?
It’s a luminous envelope of plasma that surrounds the Sun and other celestial bodies. It’s mostly seen when a total solar eclipse happens.
What is the Solar Wind?
It’s when the sun liberates streams of plasma and particles into space.
What’s a Sunspot?
It’s any of the dark spots that appear at times on the Sun’s surface and that are mostly visible through a telescope.
What is a Solar Flare?
Solar flares are a sudden explosion of energy caused by tangling, crossing or reorganizing of magnetic field lines near sunspots.
What is a Prominence?
The elevation of a summit relative to its surrounding terrain.
What is Fusion?
The joining of atomic nuclei in a reaction to form nuclei of heavier atoms, as the combination of deuterium atoms to form helium atoms.
What is Fission?
A process where the nucleus of an atom splits, releasing energy.
