Atmosphere Flashcards
What is the atmosphere?
It’s the layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.
What are the main gases found in the atmosphere?
78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen 4% Water vapour 0.03% CO2 0.01% Others
What are the characteristics of water vapour?
- The concentration varies with the seasons.
- The mass of air varies with the altitud.
- It varies with the properties of the Earth’s surface beneath the air.
How is cabon dioxide produced?
By the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gasses.
How does the layers vary?
Becaue of the different temperatures, or temperature changes.
As you move up through the troposphere, temperature decreases.
TRUE
As you move up through stratosphere, temperature decreases.
FALSE
It increases.
As you move up through the mesosphere, temperature remains the same.
FALSE
It decreases.
As you move up through the thermosphere, temperature increases.
TRUE
What are the atmospheric layers?
5 layers
Trposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere.
What are the characteristics of the troposphere?
Layer closest to the surface.
Ends at the tropopause.
What are the characteristics of the Stratosphere?
Layer above the troposphere.
Contains the ozone layer.
Ends at the stratopause.
What are the characteristics of the mesosphere?
Layer above the stratosphere.
Ends at the mesopause.
What are the characteristics of the termosphere?
Layer above the mesosphere.
Absorbs the solar radiation.
What are the characteristics of the exosphere?
Outermost layer of the atmosphere.
Transitional space between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
