Introduction to the Neck and Skull Flashcards
Hard structures of the neck:
- Seven cervical vertebrae
- Cartilages of the Larynx and trachea
- Hyoid bone
Describe the Atlas:
C1
Actions: Articulates with base of skull; involved in nodding of head
Very fragile and delicate; holds up vertebrae of head
Describe the Axis:
C2
Action: Rotation of head; movement between C1 and C2
Has a posterior articular facet for the transverse ligament of atlas
Describe the Hyoid bone;
Holds airway open
Fraction may lead to suffocation
Stylohyoid attaches to the lesser horn
Superior Neck boundaries:
- External occipital protuberance (inion)
- Superior nuchal line
- Mastoid process
- Angular tract
- Inferior border of mandible
- Mental symphysis
Inferior neck boundaries:
- Spine of C7
- Spine of scapula
- Acromion
- Clavicle
- Manubrium of Sternum
Posterior neck boundaries:
Vertebral column
Anterior neck boundaries:
Midline structures
Superior to inferior: Hard structures and soft tissues that connect
1. Mental symphysis of mandible- Myeloid m connects them
2. Hyoid bone: Thyrohyoid membrane
3. Thyroid cartilage: Cricothyroid membrane
4. Cricoid cartilage: Cricotracheal membrane
5. Tracheal rings
6. Manubrium
Boundaries of the superior thoracic aperture (Thoracic inlet):
- Manubrium of the sternum
- First ribs
- First thoracic vertebrae
Structures associated w/ or passing through the superior thoracic aperture:
- Right and left brachiocephalic veins (formed by subclavian and internal jugular veins)
- Branches of the arch of the aorta: (Common carotid, Subclavian, Vertebral, Thyrocervical trunk, Internal thoracic)
- Apices of lung
- Trachea
- Esophagus
- Thoracic Duct
- Vagus N
- Recurrent laryngeal N
- Phrenic N
- Sympathetic trunks
- Vertebral column and deep back muscles
Cranium:
Houses the brain
- Frontal
- Sphenoid
- Temporal
- Parietal
- Occipital
- Ethmoid (Not visible from lateral view)
Facial Skeleton:
- Zygoma
- Maxilla
- Nasal bones
- Mandbile
- Palatine bone (not visible from lateral view)
Review all the landmarks

Wormian Bones (Structural bone):
Are circumscribed areas of bone seen along sutures of the skull where flat bones come together
