Introduction to the Human Cell Flashcards
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Complex system of flattened sacs called cisternae which is connected to BOTH the nuclear and cell surface membrane.
What are the two different types of Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Smooth E.R
Rough E.R
Describe the role of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum in the cell.
Smooth E.R is responsible for the synthesis and transport of lipids and carbohydrates within the cell.
Describe the role of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum in the cell.
Provides a large surface area for the synthesis of proteins, and a pathway for the transport of materials throughout the cell.
According to the Fluid Mosaic model, what makes up the Cell surface membrane?
Phospholipids (phosphate head and lipid tail) Glycolipids + Glycoproteins. Cholesterol Carrier Proteins/ Channel proteins. Receptor Molecules
Describe the role of Mitochondria within the Cell.
Mitochondria is often called the powerhouse of the cell and is the site at which aerobic respiration in the cell takes place. More mitochondria= more metabolically active cell.
