Human movement Flashcards
What are the six functions of the skeletal system
Supports the body Facilitates movement Serves as points of attachment Protects internal organs Produces blood cells Stores and releases minerals and fat.
What are the two types of bone tissue.
Compact (cortical) bone and cancellous bone.
What is the structure and function of compact(cortical) bone?
Compact cortical bone is hard and dense, providing strength support and protection. It is honeycomb in appearance and formed of many rings. At the centre of which lies the ha version canal.
What is the structure and function of cancellous bone?
Spongy and honeycomb in appearance it gives strength and lightness. THIS BONE ISNT SOFT. It is found in the epiphysis of the bone.
What is the role of cartilage?
Cartilage covers the surface of joints reducing friction and preventing damage.
Give three examples of where cartilage is found
In the sternum where it joins ribs together, within the walls of the trachea and in the larynx (voice box)
What are the three types of cartilage
Elastic cartilage, fibrocartilage, and hyaline cartilage.
What is the structure of elastic cartilage
Strong and supple cartilage containin proteins elastin and collagen. Corresponds histologically to hyaline however it contains a dense network of branched elastin fibres.
What is the structure of fibrocartilage
Fibrocartilage contains large amounts of collagen and is able to withstand compression collagen type 1 is dominant.
What is the structure of hyaline cartilage
Hyaline cartilage is tissue that contains collagen fibers and develops from the mesenchmal stem cells.
What is articular cartilage
Articular cartilage is a specialised form of hyaline cartilage, that transforms the ends of bones into lubricated wear proof slightly compressible surfaces.
What are the different types of bone marrow
Red and yellow
What is the function of red bone marrow
Red bone marrow is where haematpoesis occurs- the production of blood cells.
What is the function of yellow bone marrow?
Containing adipose tissue the yellow bone marrow can be used as a source of energy for, the adipocytes of the tissue
What is the structural classification of joints (three types)
Fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial.
