Introduction to Psychological Statistics Flashcards
Why learn stats?
- it is important for us to be able to understand psychology research articles.
- it is crucial to understand for us to do research ourselves.
- it develops our analytical and critical thinking.
What is Psychology?
A scientific study that helps us Describe, Predict, Explain and Control human behavior.
What is Statistics?
A branch of mathematics that organizes, summarizes, analyzes, and interprets groups of numbers and information.
What is Psychological statistics?
Psychological statistics is the application of formulas, theorems, numbers that help us describe, predict, explain and control behavior.
the set of all individuals of interest in a particular study
population
a value–usually a numerical value–that describes a population
parameter
a set of individuals selected from a population; represents the population in a research study
sample
a value–usually a numerical value–that describes a sample
statistic
a characteristic or condition that changes or has different values for different indivduals
variable
is a particular person’s value on a variable
score
measurements or observations
data (plural), datum (singular)
a collection of measurements or observations
data set
are statistical procedures used to summarize, organize and simplify data
descriptive statistics
consists of techniques that allows us to study samples and then make generalization about the populations from which they were selected
inferential statistics
the naturally occuring discrepancy, or error, that exists between a sample statistic and the corresponding population parameter
sampling error
