Introduction to Microbiology By Dr Najeeb Flashcards
The smallest infectious particles that doesn’t have DNA or RNA
Prions, they’re protein particles
Group of disease produced by prions are called what?
Transmissible Fungiform Encephalopathy
Does our cells have gene that can produce prion related protein?
Yes
Beta plated human cell proteins gives rise to?
Prions
Why are beta plated misfolded proteins infectious?
This because catabolic protease can’t degrade them, hence the accumulated and cause disease.
Extracellular beta plated protein is called
Amyloid
Another name for madcow disease
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy
Abnormal beta plated proteins will enter the cell and induce misfolded beta proteins from normal alpha helical proteins
True
Pathological conditions associated with beta plated proteins are;
Amyloidosis and spongiform encephalopathies
Second smallest infectious agents are;
Plasmids,
Bacteriophages,
Transposons
What are plasmids
The extrachromosomal DNA bacteria particles that’s capable of causing a disease
What are bacteriophages?
They’re special types of virus with genetic material that acts like plasmid in disease infestation of bacterias…
E.g bacteriophages infest diphtheria to produce disease
What are transposons?
They’re special types of DNA fragments that can jump around.
They’re called Jumping genes.
System of transport is from transposons to Plasmid.( Produces are different nature of infested bacteria from others caused by the same plasmid)
Is a virus an organism? give reasons.
Virus are not organisms. They only have genetic materials.
Organisms are made of cells.
Genetic material plus capsid in virus is called?
Nucleocapsid.
