Introduction to Microbiology Flashcards
• What is a thermophile?
An organism that grows well >37°C
• What is a mesophile?
An organism that grows best at 37°C
Diplo-
Organisms sit in pairs
Staphylo-
Organisms sit in a bunch. Staphule in ancient greek means bunch of grapes, hence the word.
Strepto-
Organisms sit in a line
Gram stain +ve and -ve: what are the colours?
Why do you get differences in colour?
Blue is gram stain +ve
Pink is gram stain -ve
P doesn’t go with P
Gram stain +ve retain the original colour as they have a thick cell wall whereas gram stain -ve bacteria have a thin cell wall - iodine stain can enter and stain.
Are staphylococcus and streptococcus gram +ve or -ve?
How do you differentiate the two?
catalase
Gram +ve
presence of Catalase
Staph - catalase +ve
strep - catalase -ve
catalase contains ‘a’ so is staph
which bacteria is associated to reheated rice/
bacillus cereus
which bacteria can cause flaccid paralysis by preventing release of ACh at nerve endings + produce a neurotoxin
clostridium botulinum
which bacteria causes diarrhoea, fever, nausea and abdo pain
clostridium difficile
which bacteria is associated with dental sepsis and uterine coils
actinomyces spp
which bacteria is associated with acne
propionibacterium spp
‘pop’
name 2 type of bacteria that are gram -ve coccus?
Neisseria spp: N. meningitidis, N. gonorrhoea
name the only type of gram -ve bacteria that is coccobacillus
Haemophilus influenzae
Name 2 types of spiral curved bacillus gram -ve bacteria:
Helicobacter pylori, camplyobacter spp
