Introduction to Low-Temperature Sterilization Flashcards
Efficiency
The ability to produce a desired or intended result.
Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL)
The maximum amount of chemical concentration or exposure to a sterile processor allowed by OSHA standards.
Exposure monitoring
A test process that monitors sterilant concentrations during the sterilization cycle so they do not leak into the work area where sterile processors could be inadvertently exposed to a dangerous toxin.
Sterilization performance monitoring
A way to monitor the performance of the sterilizer specific to the method used.
Penetration
The sterilant must be able to pass into the package and reach every surface of the item inside, including lumens and hinges.
Material compatibility
The sterilant does not affect the item being sterilized in performance and function.
Aeration
Sterilized packages are exposed to air to remove any residual toxins in the sterilant from the surface to the package.
Leak test
A monitoring test to ensure a sterilizer holds vacuum inside the inner chamber.
Oxidation
The addition of oxygen to a compound with the loss of electrons. This is a process for killing microorganisms.
