Introduction to Learning Flashcards
Psychology
The scientific study of behavior and mental processes.
Learning
There is no single definition. The definition depends on the psychological perspective taken.
Learning (Behavioral Perspective)
Learning involves changes in observable behavior as a result of interactions with the environment.
Learning (Cognitive Perspective)
Learning is an active process of acquiring and storing knowledge in long-term memory.
Learning (Neuroscientific Perspective)
Learning is the process by which neural connections in the brain are formed, strengthened, or reorganized.
Memory
The ability to retain and retrieve information, which plays a critical role in learning.
Behavior
Anything an organism does that can be measured.
Overt Behavior
Behavior that is observable and can be described, recorded, and measured.
Covert Behavior
Behavior that is unobservable, such as thoughts and emotions; also called private events.
Basic Science
Science focused on acquiring knowledge for its own sake, without immediate real-world application.
Applied Science
Science aimed at finding solutions to real-world problems using research findings.
Experimental Analysis of Behavior
A research approach focused on studying behavior in controlled experimental settings.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
A practical approach that applies learning principles to solve real-world behavioral problems.
