Introduction to Irrigation Flashcards
Advantages of Irrigation
Increase in food production
Increase in income and national cash flow
Increase in the labor employment
reduce the risk of catastrophic damage caused by drought
increase in the value of the land
Domestic and industrial water supply
generation of hydroelectric power
improve navigation and communication facilities
Disadvantages of irrigation
water logging salinity of the soil pollution of the underground water causes damper and colder climate causes outbreak of diseases like malaria effects the aeration of the soil
what is the significance of reliable and suitable irrigation
it enhances the the production, quality and assure economic vitality
provides the necessity requirement of the people and strengthens the security .
what is the responsibility of an EA to ensure sufficient water requirement for farming ?
As an extension agent on should advise and demonstrate on the water management activities such as assessing the water requirement of the crops ,selecting methods of irrigation and drainage of fields, maintaining water resources and controlling erosion
what are the challenges of irrigation in the future?
the major concern with respect to irrigation in the future is its lack of efficiency. In the present situation of irrigation methods water are wasted through deep percolation and surface runoff. With increase demand of water in the urban and industrial activities irrigation
science faces challenges in maximizing the efficiency.. Additionally since the water resources are shrinking , utilization of these resources effectively and efficiently have become crucial. Only then it is possible to produce more food from the available water resources.
Issues for improvement of achieving irrigation goals
1.automation of irrigation systems
2.develop decision support system for the judicious utilization of water resources
3.Use technology and their integration with the latest 4.available technology
develop cost effective water management technologies
5.ompact climate change on available water resources and coping up strategies.
6. Factors effecting water productivity and implementation of interventions, which improve water productivity in various agro-climatic zones.
7. Capacity building and training of water users to create awareness about use of this precious resource
8.develop and transfer of socially acceptable and economically viable sustainable water management technologies in farmers field for effective implementation
What is irrigation?
It is the artificial application of water to the soil. it is used to assist the growing of agriculture crops, maintenance of landscapes, and revegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rainfall.
What is the purpose of irrigation?
growth
Development
Production
Why is irrigation important?
irrigation is an important action because rainfall is irregular, unreliable and unpredictable. it is also necessary to to make use of cultivated land through out the year and contributes in more no of crops.
Necessity of irrigation
insufficient rainfall-irrigation is necessary in those areas where there is not enough rainfall for satisfactory growth of the crops
Non-uniform rainfall- Sometimes the distribution of rainfall in the zone of crop area is uneven
Growing perennial crops- it is important for the growth of perennial crops
ill-time rainfall- as and when water is required by the crops there is rainfall to fulfill the need of the crops
