Introduction to Genetics Flashcards
What is a gene?
The basic unit of inheritance - the instruction for a trait that is passed on from generation to generation.
What is a trait?
A physical or physiological characteristic that, when heritable, is consistently passed on from one generation to the next.
What is the central dogma of biology?
DNA –> RNA –> Protein
What are the two parts of a gene?
The coding region, and the promoter (or control) region.
What is the TATA box?
The promotor region of a gene, in eukaryotes it is mainly found 25 nucleotides upstream from the coding region and consists of mostly thymine and adanine.
What is chromatin?
A mixture of DNA and proteins called histones.
What are histones?
Small proteins that are basic and positively charged that associate with the negatively charged phosphate-sugar backbone of DNA.
Karyotype
The number and visual appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an organism or species.
