Introduction To Endocrine System Flashcards
What is negative feedback?
A response in a way to reverse the direction of change.
What is positive feedback?
Response in a way so as to change the variable even more in the direction of the change.
Osmolarity vs osmolality.
Osmolarity is the number of osmoles per litre of solution, osmolality is the number of osmoles per Kg of solution.
What are hormones?
Chemical signals produced in endocrine glands or tissues that travel in the bloodstream to cause an effect on other tissues.
What are some roles of carrier proteins?
Increases solubility of hormone in plasma, increases half-life, readily accessible reserve.
What is ghrelin?
A peptide hormone released from stomach wall when empty, stimulates appetite.
Role of PYY?
Inhibits the excitatory primary neurones of the accurate nucleus and stimulates the inhibitory neurones, therefore suppressing appetite.
