Q

What sort of education did Elizabeth receive?

A

Elizabeth received one of the best educations available at the time, just like her brother Edward did, she was fluent in many languages and had an extensive knowledge of court politics by the age of 12. This knowledge and wit would keep her live under mary’s anti Protestant reign, however it also singled her out, as this was unusual level of education for a woman of the time.

Q

How was Elizabeth treated when she first came to the throne?

A

Many people welcomed the fresh start after the tyrannical reign of Mary first. However, there was a big divide between the Catholic and Protestant population and the country was also in debt, 300,000, trying to pay with the war in France and in Scotland that Henry had left. Elizabeth therefore, had to raise taxes and lost popularity, which was scarce as she was a Protestant woman and had a weakend claimed the throne after being removed by Henry in her childhood

Q

What were some of the main Catholic beliefs that varied from Protestant beliefs?

A

Catholics believe that the Pope was head of the church in Rome as God’s chosen representative on earth.

The Bible should only be written in Latin and read by church leaders to keep it pure.

Churches should be decorated with lots of gold and bright colours to show God’s glory.

Priests monks and nuns are the chosen people of God so should follow strict rules like no marriage.

Eating the body and blood of Christ, the bread and wine, is to literally take it his body and blood (transubstantiation).

Kings were able to run their nation and their church however they saw fit

The Bible should be in any language so it can be accessible to all

church leaders are normal humans who should help others and be allowed to marry
